The Salvation Forum has announced another protest in Mogadishu on May 16 after accusing the federal government of obstructing an opposition protest planned for yesterday in Mogadishu, which it said was in support of people displaced from their homes.
The forum said it would continue what it described as a “peaceful struggle” against forced displacement and government abuse of power.
A statement issued by the forum said that yesterday’s protest was in accordance with the constitution, and that security agencies were officially notified of the location and time of the event to ensure security and the movement of participants.
The forum said that the government initially insisted that the protest be held at Eng. Yarisow Ex-Konis Stadium, but the opposition leadership accepted this to avoid a security crisis.
However, the statement said that the city had been mobilised with military, police and intelligence forces, with key roads closed and public and vehicle movement restricted.
The forum also accused security forces of opening fire on protesters in Dayniile district. According to the statement, one person was killed and two others were injured.
It expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased, calling on the government to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and bring to justice all those involved.
The forum said that the security measures taken had severely affected normal life in Mogadishu, including transport, education, business and other social services.
It also called for the release of youth and others arrested for participating in the protests, and an end to what it described as intimidation of opposition politicians, journalists and civil rights activists.
