At least 20 people have been killed in fighting between two rival clans in the Laashimo Valley area of Eerigaabo district in Sanaag region, local sources said.

The fighting, which began yesterday over a dispute over grazing land, has caused significant loss of life and property, with the conflict lasting more than 24 hours.

So far, there has been no official intervention by the two clan militias, both from the Warsangali clan, who have fought in the Sanaag region on several occasions.

Local sources said the fighting stopped spontaneously this morning, with peace efforts being led by Puntland traditional elders. Some of the intellectuals are heading to the areas of the fighting to strengthen their resolve.

The dead, most of whom were from the warring parties, were buried today in mass graves in the area where the conflict took place.

Also, more than 30 people injured in the fighting were taken to the town of Erigavo for treatment at medical facilities.

In the northeast, Puntland and Somaliland, which jointly claim the areas where the fighting took place, have so far failed to directly intervene between the two clan militias that have been fighting.
