The United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) has formally welcomed the invitation extended by the Federal Government of Somalia to the political parties to hold a conference to discuss the political situation in the country and to discuss the critical issues that the Government and the Opposition are facing.

In a statement published on social media, UNTMIS said that the conference is an opportunity to jointly seek solutions to long-standing political and national issues.

“UNTMIS welcomes the invitation extended by the Federal Government of Somalia to the Somali Future Council to hold a meeting to find a way forward on important national issues,” the statement said.

UNTMIS also called on all relevant parties to engage in the dialogue in good faith, while giving priority to the interests of the Somali people.

It noted that genuine dialogue and inclusive participation are essential to finding solutions to the remaining political differences.

UNTMIS added that it stands by the Somali-led efforts, in collaboration with international partners, to achieve political consensus and lasting stability.

Earlier, the conference announced by the Somali President was welcomed by the European Union, although there has been no official response from the senior leadership of the Somali Future Council, either accepting or rejecting it.

On the other hand, the European Union has also warmly welcomed its Ambassador to Somalia, describing it as a practical step towards ending the political conflict in Somalia.
