The Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission (INEBC) has announced that it has extended the deadline for the submission of candidate lists in the South West State, and postponed the date of the elections to the Houses of Representatives and local governments.
The decision came following a formal request from political parties, who on April 23 requested more time to complete the registration procedures for their candidates. The commission also held consultations with the leaders of the parties on April 25, at a meeting held at the commission’s headquarters.
The commission said that its assessment revealed the need to provide more time to the parties to ensure transparency, accountability and legal compliance in the electoral process.
According to the press release, the new deadline for the submission of candidate lists has been set for May 5, 2026. Also, the election day, previously scheduled for April 28, has been postponed to May 10, 2026.
The commission called on all political organizations to take advantage of the extended period and submit their candidate lists in accordance with the requirements and procedures.
Meanwhile, the commission said it will continue efforts to strengthen public awareness, increase public participation in the elections, and ensure an efficient and credible electoral process.
The electoral commission reiterated its commitment to holding fair, transparent, and credible elections.
