The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has said that the Federal Government is focusing heavily on developing and utilizing the Somali sea as a backbone for the country’s economic growth.
The President made the remarks at an event marking the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, stating that the government’s plan is to upgrade the country’s ports to a world-class standard to boost trade and connect with global markets.
“The government is committed to making the Somali sea the backbone of the country’s economic growth,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
He also called for investment in the country’s ports, noting that sea transport is cheaper and safer than land transport, which is a great opportunity for Somali and international businesspeople.
The President stressed that developing the maritime sector is a key pillar of the country’s economic strategy, noting that Somalia’s long coastline is a national asset with the potential to generate significant growth and investment.
He also said that the government is giving special priority to ensuring maritime security, combating illegal fishing, and protecting natural marine resources.
“The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to protecting the marine environment and preventing resource depletion, so that future generations can benefit from it,” the President continued.
While inspecting the new building of the Ministry of Ports, the President commended the ministry’s staff for their efforts in developing essential services related to maritime trade and connecting Somalia to global markets.
