136 MPs from both Houses of the Federal Parliament have welcomed the decision of the South West State to hold its elections and appoint an electoral commission, describing it as a constitutional step.
A statement issued by the MPs said that the planned elections should be transparent, inclusive, and in line with the state and interim constitutions of the country. They also called on Hirshabelle State and Galmudug State to hold similar elections, in accordance with their respective constitutions.
Meanwhile, the MPs strongly condemned what they described as a “blatant invasion” led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his government, which they said was against the South West State administration. They accused the use of troops and restrictions on travel by the people of the South West region.
The press release stated that such actions undermine the federal system, the reputation of security institutions, and can create opportunities for armed groups in the country to take advantage of them.
The lawmakers also warned the president and his government to stop what they described as constitutional violations and abuse of power, noting that if these issues are not stopped, they will take legal measures, including invoking Article 92 of the constitution, which allows for the removal of the president from office when accused of serious violations.
Finally, the lawmakers called on the Somali community to maintain unity and security, while also calling on the international community to play a role in protecting the sovereignty of Somalia.
