Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has issued a stern warning to the Eritrean leadership, saying his country will not tolerate any further attempts to harm the Ethiopian people.
Speaking in Tigrinya on the war in Tigray, Abiy strongly condemned what he described as widespread genocide and looting by Eritrean troops who entered the Tigray region.
“We started with good, but we were pushed into evil,” the prime minister said, acknowledging that Ethiopia had initially welcomed Eritrea’s military support during the war, but noting that this support could not cover up the crimes that followed.
The prime minister said that at the time, the federal government was preoccupied with its own war against Tigray forces, which left it unable to fully confront what he described as foreign interference.
Abiy also directly criticized Eritrea’s political and economic situation, accusing its leadership of not prioritizing development and peaceful change. He noted that Ethiopia is well aware of the behavior of what he called “Shabia,” the name of Eritrea’s ruling party.
“We know it well. We will not give him another chance to harm our people. If he tries, I believe it will be his last attempt,” the Prime Minister said.
