The Somali government said last night that Ahmed Hurre, a senior advisor to the President of Puntland, has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in insecurity.
According to reports, Hurre was arrested at the Airport Hotel in Mogadishu while he was meeting with several members of the Federal Parliament, some of whom were also tortured.
MP Sareedo Mohamed Hassan Jeyte posted on social media about the manner in which the advisor was arrested: “We were attacked by the Somali police who entered the Airport Hotel where we were staying in Mogadishu and asked MP Sadaam where I was staying. I was not in my room. After seeing that he was awake, they took Ahmed Abdi Hurre and shot us, threatening us, saying, ‘I have survived a murder and kidnapping based on coercion to vote.'”
The Somali police also spoke out on the matter, confirming Hurre’s arrest.
“The Somali Police Force is fulfilling its national duty and tonight the suspect Ahmed Abdi Mohamud Hurre was arrested for engaging in insecurity activities and is currently being investigated,” a police statement said.
The incident comes at a time of political tension in Mogadishu over the constitutional amendment process, raising concerns about clashes between the leadership and some opposition lawmakers.
