The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, held a press conference today at the Commission’s headquarters, announcing the schedule for the Banadir Regional Council elections.

In a press release issued by the Chairman, it was stated that the commission has now completed one year of work, and he explained the various stages of the commission’s activities.

Chairman Abdikarim said that the Banadir Regional Council elections are scheduled for December 25, which is the official voting day.

The elections will take place in the 16 districts of the region, and 61 political organizations will participate and their supporters will participate in these elections.

The Chairman also noted that the commission is closely monitoring all preparations for the elections, and is striving to make them transparent, fair, and reflect the will of the community.

The committee has delayed the date it set several times in the past, and it is unknown whether it will hold the election on time again. On the other hand, the Somali government and the opposition have not yet reached an agreement on the local council elections and the country’s general elections in 2026.

Some political organizations, for their part, have strongly opposed the way the commission is managing the electoral process, arguing that there is no complete independence for the members of the National Electoral Commission.
