The Chairman of the Somali National Electoral Commission, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, who held a press conference in Mogadishu today, announced that they have extended the registration period for the country’s associations, which ended on March 31st.

Chairman Abdikarin said that the extension came at the request of some associations, and the electoral commission decided to add a period of 21 days.

“In the past few days, we have been in discussions with associations that have already registered and those that are still working on it. They asked us to add 21 days. The committee held a meeting on the request yesterday and decided to add a period of 21 days, since the previous period ended on March 31st,” said the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan.

He also indicated that the chairman of the electoral commission will hold the local council elections at the end of June this year, 2025.

“We will hold the local council elections in June, and our work as a committee is going well,” said chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan.

However, the Somali National Electoral Commission is making great efforts to hold one-person, one-vote elections in the country, while opposition politicians and leaders of the Puntland and Jubbaland administrations are opposed to holding one-person, one-vote elections.
