The acting UN envoy to Somalia, James Swan, who delivered a speech at the UN Security Council, underlined the importance of adopting enforceable electoral laws and establishing an independent electoral commission.
James Swan also reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to support Somalia in overcoming technical, logistical, and financial challenges to ensure a timely and credible election.
Swan expressed concern over the tensions in the region as a result of the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1. Praising the mediating efforts of international friends, he reiterated the decision of the Security Council to protect the independence and territorial integrity of Somalia.
The UN ambassador urged both sides in Ethiopia and Somalia to seek a diplomatic solution in accordance with international law.
“The United Nations is fully committed to supporting Somalia’s priorities,” Swan concluded, saying he hopes the United Nations will work closely with the Somali government.
