The Minister of Petroleum and Minerals of the Somali government, Abdirisaq Omar Mohamed, said that in April of next year, the Turkish government can officially start oil drilling in Somalia.
The minister said that oil production is the place where Somalia can get out of poverty and boost the country’s economy. He said that the Turkish government is working rapidly to complete the work before the excavation.
The Minister of Petroleum said that there are 13 oil exploration sites in the sea. However, he also pointed out that there is a company in Qatar that has entered into an agreement with the government to explore for oil in three areas on the eastern side, including the Afgoye district.
The minister said that the government has signed an agreement with four companies for offshore oil exploration. He said the areas to be investigated for oil are Jubbaland, Galmudug, South West and Hirshabeelle.
He said that there are more than 200 packages in the Somali sea that are expected to be full of oil. He said that no survey has been done yet, due to security concerns and conflicts in the country.
