The United Nations Special Envoy for Somalia, Catriona Laing, held a closed-door meeting with President Deni in Garowe, after Puntland announced that it had withdrawn its recognition from the federal government.
A brief statement posted on UNSOM’s Twitter account said that the meeting discussed the priority issues for the construction of the Somali government, including the process of reviewing the constitution.
President Deni, who appeared at a press conference held at the presidency together with the representative of the United Nations, said that they shared with the United Nations the decision to withdraw recognition from the federal government of Somalia.
The representative of the United Nations, Catriona Laing, said that the President of Puntlad told her that she is committed to the continuation of the constitutional issues, in order to find a solution to the current dispute over the amendments made to the constitution.
Her arrival in Garowe came hours after the Puntland cabinet agreed to withdraw confidence from the federal government of Somalia.
Puntland has said that it will act as an independent state, as long as there is an agreed Somali constitution.
