Somali diaspora in South Africa say they prefer to stay in the country despite growing protests and anti-foreigner sentiment, arguing that the security and political situation in Somalia does not allow them to return.
The chairman of the African Diaspora Forum (ADF), Amir Sheikh, said most Somalis do not see returning to Somalia as a viable option, as there is still conflict and political instability.
The comments come as South Africa is witnessing protests demanding the departure of undocumented migrants, as the government has also tightened measures to curb illegal immigration.
Countries including Malawi, Mozambique, Ghana and Nigeria have begun repatriating their citizens from South Africa, but Somali community leaders say most Somalis prefer to stay in the country despite facing fear and pressure.
The ADF said Somali traders close their shops when protests are held in areas where they are common, to avoid clashes, and support the security forces in maintaining peace and order.
On the other hand, human rights groups warn that political tensions in Somalia and the dispute surrounding the 2026 election process could further exacerbate instability, which could hinder efforts to combat Al-Shabaab and international support for the Federal Government of Somalia.
