US President Donald Trump has faced criticism from officials and Muslim rights groups after he posted a video on social media of Somali children wearing hijabs at a graduation ceremony at a school in Minnesota.
The 14-second video showed kindergarten students at Gateway STEM Academy in St. Paul. Many of the Somali girls appeared in hijabs and graduation gowns.
Trump posted the video on his Truth Social account, retweeting a post from the account “End Wokeness,” which said all of the girls in the video were wearing hijabs. The president did not respond to a request for comment.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the video could fuel anti-Muslim sentiment and endanger the children in the video.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said it was unacceptable for the US President to target young children because of what they were wearing.
The Somali American Partnership also said the Somali community is an important part of Minnesota society, and Somali children deserve to be valued for their education and future, rather than used for political debates or hate speech against Muslims and immigrants.
