The Cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Somalia and Egypt, which aims to strengthen cooperation in the fields of maritime transport and port development.
The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Transport of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Republic of Somalia, with the aim of developing port infrastructure, exchanging technical expertise, enhancing the capacity of institutions operating in the maritime sector and harmonizing maritime transport services with international standards.
The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, welcomed the approval by the Cabinet, describing the agreement as an important step in strengthening the development of the country’s economic infrastructure and expanding Somalia’s cooperation with countries in the region and the world.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, the agreement is expected to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the fields of port development, knowledge and technology exchange, professional training, and the upgrading of institutions operating in the maritime sector.
The ministry also noted that the agreement is part of the government’s strategy to develop economic infrastructure, enhance the competitiveness of Somali ports, and strengthen Somalia’s role in regional trade and maritime transport.
The agreement also supports the implementation of the National Transition Plan (NTP), as the government hopes to contribute to the development of port services and the growth of the maritime economy.
