Representative Ilhan Omar has officially announced her candidacy for re-election to the U.S. Congress, saying she will continue to represent the people of Minnesota’s 5th District.

Ilhan Omar posted a post on her Twitter account saying she had submitted her candidacy, but she closed the comments section, which has drawn attention from social media users.

She said in the post that she was excited to continue representing the people of her district. The move ended speculation that she would run for re-election, as she chose to focus on defending her seat in Congress.

With the 2026 elections approaching, Ilhan Omar remains one of the most high-profile politicians to watch in Minnesota politics. Her campaign is expected to garner national attention, as she is one of the most prominent members of the Democratic Party in Congress.

Her re-election announcement comes amid ongoing controversy over the Feeding Our Future corruption scandal, which has implicated many Somalis in Minnesota, and has been described as one of the largest corruption cases to emerge during the COVID-19 era.

Last week, Aimee Bock, the organization’s founder, was sentenced to nearly 42 years in prison after being convicted of fraud and embezzlement.

To date, Ilhan Omar has not been charged, and no formal charges have been filed by federal officials regarding her involvement in the Feeding Our Future scheme.

Ilhan Omar has previously denied all allegations.
