The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic representative to Somaliland, according to a press release issued by the organization’s general secretariat.
The OIC said it considers the move a violation of the sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The organization described Somaliland as “a region in northwestern Somalia”, rejecting the legitimacy of the appointment.
The statement also noted that Israel, which the OIC described as a “colonial power”, has taken a step that is inconsistent with the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Meanwhile, the OIC reiterated its full support for the Federal Government of Somalia and its full support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity and legitimate institutions.
The organization called for respect for international law, particularly those that protect the sovereignty and borders of member states.
Finally, the OIC stressed that any action that undermines the unity of Somalia is unacceptable, urging all parties to abide by international law.
