The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has arrived in Arusha, Tanzania, where he will attend the 25th Annual Summit of the East African Community (EAC).
According to the Somali presidency, President Hassan Sheikh will deliver a speech at the meeting focused on strengthening regional cooperation in the areas of economy, security, trade and connecting the societies of the member states of the Association.
The president will also hold meetings with other leaders attending the meeting, with regional security issues expected to be discussed, especially the fight against terrorism and the development of cross-border trade.
The annual EAC summit this year will discuss agendas including strengthening cooperation between regional countries, economic development, and regional politics, while trying to find new ways to strengthen trade and social ties among the member states of the Association.
Somalia officially became the 8th member of the East African Community on 4 March 2024, after submitting its accession agreement. This ensures that Somalia can now participate in all EAC activities and programs.
The Somali government has recently begun issuing a new EAC passport, to facilitate the movement of Somalis among member states of the organization, which is an important step towards regional integration.
