Somalia has received a major boost in military support after Turkey, Egypt and Serbia sent modern weapons and equipment, boosting the Somali National Army’s capabilities as it faces growing security and diplomatic challenges.
Senior Somali military officials confirmed to the Turkish Defense Agency that Turkey had officially delivered military equipment to Somalia, including assault rifles, armored vehicles, ammunition, command and control systems, and night-vision equipment.
The report added that the support came at a time when the Gorgor units, which are specially trained troops at Turkey’s TÜRKSOM base in Mogadishu, are being deployed.
This, the agency said, is evidence that Ankara is not just training, but has directly deployed a military force capable of fighting and operating in Somalia.
Meanwhile, Somali officials also confirmed that Egypt and Serbia provided support with weapons and military equipment, although the type and quantity of weapons provided by the two countries were not disclosed.
The arms deal comes at a time when Somalia is receiving strong diplomatic support for its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Arab, Islamic and African countries have jointly issued a statement condemning the recent visit of an Israeli official to Somaliland.
