Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has said he welcomes the National Consultation Forum announced this week by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

“I welcome the invitation extended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to hold a National Consultation on the country’s fateful issues, primarily elections, security and the Constitution,” said a statement issued by former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

Farmaajo announced that for this forum to be fruitful, he would strengthen calls for the full participation of the heads of state, especially Puntland and Jubbaland, who were absent from the National Consultation Forum.

Finally, Farmaajo concluded his statement by stating that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to reverse what he described as unilateral steps that are causing the conflict, including the suspension of the elected constitution, the incomplete work on electoral laws and commissions, and the dissolution of the National Consultative Forum, which is an obstacle to state-building and cooperation at the federal and state levels.

All members of the opposition have unanimously welcomed the National Consultative Forum announced by the Somali President, but have attached several conditions to their participation.
