Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed met with the US Ambassador to Somalia, Richard Riley, in Mogadishu, during a meeting that focused on political and security issues in Somalia and the need to advance the state-building process.

Sheikh Sharif thanked the US government for its continued support for Somalia in the areas of security, counter-terrorism and humanitarian assistance.

“We met in Mogadishu with the US Ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Richard Riley, and focused on the historical relationship between the two countries, the general situation in Somalia, especially security, politics and the importance of advancing the state-building process, which is always based on political stability,” said Sheikh Sharif.

The meeting is part of efforts to strengthen the unity of Somali leaders ahead of the crucial elections expected to take place in the country next year.

The US government is strengthening its support for Somalia’s democratic process and the building of state institutions despite ongoing political challenges.
