The Puntland Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management (MoHADM) has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance following severe water shortages in many parts of Puntland, which have caused displacement, livestock deaths, and an increase in water-related diseases.
The ministry said that erratic rains and combined dry conditions have severely affected wells, berkadas, and other essential water sources, causing particular hardship for pastoralist families in the Nugaal, Mudug, Bari, and Sanaag regions.
“Many communities have been forced to migrate long distances to access clean water. There is a growing risk of water-related diseases and intra-community conflicts resulting from dwindling resources,” the ministry said.
Assessments indicate an urgent situation of increasing malnutrition, especially among women and children.
The Ministry of Relief has called on humanitarian organizations and international partners to urgently increase support for water transportation, well maintenance, and essential sanitation services.
