Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud today appointed the new Commander of the Somali Navy after referring to the proposal of the Somali Minister of Defense and officially appointed Lieutenant General Abdiwahab Abdullahi Omar.

The President stated in the decree that the government is making efforts to strengthen the Somali Navy, so that it can take over the security and defense of our country’s maritime borders, which is important for nationhood and unity.

President Hassan Sheikh praised the former Commander of the Navy, Admiral Abdi Warsame, for the work he has done in the Navy during his tenure, and urged the new Commander to further double the national responsibilities assigned to him.

The Somali government is making efforts to rebuild the capacity of the Somali Navy to ensure the security of Somali waters, which have been repeatedly affected by acts of piracy and the depletion of natural resources in the Somali sea.

It is worth noting that the last naval forces trained for Somalia arrived in the country in 2023, having received training in Eritrea, and most of the time, Somali waters are patrolled by the European Union Mission in Somalia (EUMIS) ships, which prevent pirates from attacking commercial vessels passing through Somali waters.
