The Chinese government has condemned the growing ties between Somaliland and Taiwan, saying it has taken steps to pressure Hargeisa to persuade it to end its ties with Taipei.
The Chinese ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in a brief interview with Dalsan TV, said Taiwan is an integral part of the Chinese mainland.
“There is only one China in the world; Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. There are many countries that support the reunification of the country. That is the fundamental truth,” Wang Yu said.
He added that his government strongly condemns and warns Somaliland against its growing ties with Taiwan.
“Taiwan is cooperating with the political forces in Hargeisa, openly advocating for separatism. We condemn and warn against strengthening such ties,” Wang Yu added.
He said his government has taken steps to prevent Somaliland from becoming a state, and that the Somali government is working with them to safeguard their nation’s core interests, such as territorial integrity. “China supports the Somali government in safeguarding the territorial integrity of their nation,” he said.
Somaliland’s President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), recently said his government would enhance ties with Taiwan, a wealthy but unrecognized island.
