A very strong fire last night engulfed Gobonimo Market, which is the second largest market in Hargeisa, after the Waaheen market which was completely burnt down two years ago, which has now been rebuilt.
The fire brigade and the police made an effort to put out the fire, and the traders in the market were also seen trying to get their goods out of their tents.
“JSL Police forces quickly arrived at the scene of the fire at Gobinimo Market, in an effort to control the fire, with the help of the Fire Brigade,” said a statement from the police.
The mayor of Hargeisa, Abdikarim Mooge, said that he was very shocked by the fire that once again destroyed the business of the people, and he called for the help of the army to put out the fire.
“I have just received news that shocked me about a fire at Gobonimo Market. I call on the public to do everything possible to control the fire and prevent it from spreading,” said Mayor Mooge.
Last year, on April 1, 2022, Waaheen Market, one of the busiest markets in the Horn of Africa, burned down. Also, on the 16th of September 2023, another fire destroyed the Wajale Market, which caused great damage to the economy of Somaliland.
From the markets of Somaliland, in the last two years other fires broke out in the markets of some Somali cities, such as the Taiwan Market in Jigjiga, Mogadishu, Djibouti and Kenya, which caused great problems to the economy and business of the Somali people.
