Somalia is reviewing its decision to withdraw Ethiopian troops from the AUSSOM peacekeeping mission, which shows a major change in diplomacy between the two countries.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense Aisha Mohamed, who arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday, spoke about Ethiopia’s participation in the African Union Stabilization and Support Mission (AUSSOM).

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to peace in the region and agreed on cooperative measures to support the AUSSOM mission.

According to a report published by Bloomberg on January 2, 2025, diplomats warned that Ethiopia’s exclusion from the operation could worsen the tension between neighboring countries, as Ethiopia faces increasing threats from Al-Shabaab.

Diplomats have said that the possibility of Ethiopia being removed from the peacekeeping mission in Somalia could lead to the possibility that the tension will increase, as Ethiopia is still a target of attacks from Al-Shabaab.

On December 27, the United Nations Security Council renewed the mandate of the mission, although they are still facing challenges in obtaining funds for peacekeeping operations.
