The Daesh group in the Puntland area is reported to be engaged in gold mining in the mountainous areas of the Bari region of the Puntland administration.
An official of the Puntland intelligence agencies, who asked us to hide his name, told HOL media that Puntland security agencies are monitoring the mining activities of Daesh in several areas of the Bari region, especially remote areas that are difficult for the military to reach.
This official revealed that the Daesh group is working to get money from the mines in the region. It is reported that the people living in the areas where they are located have been paid by Daesh so that they do not oppose the mining activities.
“We have been closely monitoring the activities in the region, and it is clear that Daesh has carried out mining activities in the mountains of Bari,” said the official.
According to local sources, it is believed that local laborers, who were given money to work for Daesh, were involved in the gold mining operations.
There is a fear that ISIS will use the money it receives from mining operations for insecurity activities, including attacks in Puntland cities such as Bosaso.
The Puntland administration has recently announced that it is taking measures to control the rise of Daesh. President Deni has deployed many troops and war vehicles to Bosaso.
Security experts warn that Daesh, which is a growing force in Puntland, can have a wide influence in the Horn of Africa, especially as they seek to reach areas beyond the areas controlled by Al-Shabaab.
