The meeting of the National Consultative Council opened today at the Villa Somalia headquarters in Mogadishu, with the absence of Puntland and Jubaland. This conference shows the great divide between the Federal Government and the member states.

The President of Jubbaland Administration, Ahmed Madobe, who was initially part of the meeting, failed to bring the meeting back. Ahmed Madobe objected to making a decision on the country’s elections in the absence of Puntland.

The meeting that opened today is attended by the President of Somalia, the Prime Minister and his deputy, the presidents of South West, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, the governor of Banadir region.

It is discussed in this meeting to settle the elections at the federal and state levels.

President Hassan Sheikh recently said that he will never give up on holding elections in the country, saying that his government will not enter into political negotiations on this matter.

However, the ongoing political division seems to be hindering progress in holding public elections.
