The United Nations has congratulated the Somali government and people on Somalia’s membership of the United Nations Security Council 2025-2026.
“Somalia has come a long way in the last three decades on the road to peace, prosperity, and security. “The election of a seat on the Security Council is recognition of that progress,” said the Acting Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan.
“Somalia’s experience makes it uniquely positioned to contribute to the Council’s deliberations on international peace and security,” he added.
Somalia was last member of the United Nations Security Council in 1970-1972.
The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh, said that Somalia’s inclusion in the Security Council is a testimony to the recovery of the country.
