The Federal Government of Somalia was today forgiven the debt of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) after talks in Berne, Switzerland, between the Minister of Communications and Technology of Somalia, Mohamed Adan Macalin Ali Somali and the Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Mr. Masahiko Metoki.
The purpose of the minister’s trip to Berne was to forgive Somalia’s debt to the UPU which was about 2 million US dollars, which included membership contributions of 1 million dollars and accrued interest from September 1982 to In 2018.
The Director General of the UPU, Mr Masahiko Metoki has officially announced today that Somalia has been forgiven its debt, as it has met the requirements.
After the debt forgiveness, Somalia officially became a full member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with the lifting of the long-standing embargo.
Minister Mohamed Adan Macalin Ali Somali thanked the UPU for the various support they have given to Somalia in recent years, one of which was making it easier for the mail to arrive in the country.
Finally, the minister said that his ministry has set up a plan to revive the country’s post office, and to improve the quality of the post office staff and the materials they work with, and they will be delivered to the major cities of the country.
