The Federal Government of Somalia has officially requested the United Nations not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM).

The government of Somalia wants to move from the United Nations Office of Assistance to Somalia (UNSOM) to a regular United Nations Office.

The government has said that this change is part of a wider strategy that Somalia wants to harmonize with the structure of international relations and that of other independent countries.

Somalia, which is a candidate for the non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council in 2025-26, believes that there is no need for a political office of the United Nations outside of the current mandate.

The race for that seat shows Somalia’s commitment to participating in peace and security talks in the world, according to the official of the United Nations Mission in Somalia.

This official said that Somalia did not ask to close the United Nations office, but instead it is looking for a normal operation of the United Nations, similar to the one in other countries.
