A total of 33 incidents of piracy against commercial ships were recorded globally in the first three months of 2024, which is more than 27 incidents during the same period in 2023, according to the International Maritime Bureau (ICC).

ICC Secretary General John Denton said, “The resurgence of Somali piracy is worrying. It is important to protect business, protect the roads, and protect the safety of sailors. All measures must be taken to ensure the free flow of goods.

The return of Somali pirates comes at a time when Yemen’s Houthis are also firing on merchant ships, targeting around 80 ships in the past six months.

Also, the cost of private security for ships has increased this year, according to the International Chamber of Commerce.

London-based security experts, Subrosa Group, have launched a new maritime security division to respond to the critical need to protect large vessels in dangerous waters around the world.
