The United Nations General Assembly held an extraordinary meeting on the situation in Gaza and approved a resolution that has not yet come into effect, demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
This resolution was voted for by 153 countries that are members of the Council, while 10 countries rejected it, and 23 countries remained silent.
Among the countries that have openly rejected this resolution are Israel and the United States, who argue that the ceasefire benefits Hamas.
This resolution is the second step taken by the Assembly, and it is worth noting that in October, the Assembly called for a humanitarian ceasefire and 121 countries voted for it, while 14 countries rejected it, and 44 countries remained silent.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the resolution and urged countries to put pressure on Israel to enforce the ceasefire.
Last Friday, a similar resolution before the Security Council ended in failure, after the United States vetoed the resolution, with 13 of the 15 members of the Council voting yes, while the British government kept quiet.
The war between Israel and Hamas that started on October 7 this year has confirmed the death of 18,000 people, mostly children and women, who died in the bombing of the Gaza Strip.
