The Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Tulia Ackson, has been announced as the 31st President of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

She won an election held in the city of Luanda in Angola, competing with three other female candidates, one of whom is Mrs. Abdi Bashir of the Somali Parliament.

This woman was elected with 57% of the votes in one round of voting. Hundreds of MPs from 130 IPU parliaments voted in the election.

On the other hand, Mrs. Abdi Bashir from Somalia, who participated in the competition, received 11 votes. She said her fans voted her the winner. after she said that the Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Adan Madobe issued a letter saying that Somalia withdrew from the IPU election.

Mrs. Abdi Bashir said that she is not aware of the letter issued by the governor, which she described as regrettable and shows that the government does not want to participate in the competition.

She said that this did not discourage her and she took part in the election, and she is satisfied with the result of the election.
