The administration led by President Joe Biden is facing calls for an overhaul of the US strategy in Somalia, while the US is still engaged in a 16-year-old campaign against Al-Shabaab.

According to a report published in Foreign Affairs, the way the United States is currently using military power and airstrikes to control al-Shabaab is unlikely to lead to lasting stability and peace.

The US has carried out more than 280 airstrikes in Somalia since 2007.

Critics argue that the United States needs to shift its focus to supporting political reconciliation and stabilization efforts.

The government of Somalia is working hard to consolidate the territorial gains against Al-Shabaab and to deal with the division of society.

Later this month, the United States will join talks between Somalia and its international partners. Analysts say this represents an opportunity for the United States to push for a comprehensive political solution based on reconciliation.
