The British Embassy in Mogadishu has announced almost $7 million (£5.5 million) in additional funding to support the humanitarian response in Somalia.
Last month, heavy rains in parts of the country affected more than two million Somalis, with more than 700,000 displaced from their homes.
This additional humanitarian assistance will provide life-saving support to flood-affected people, who will be supported in food security, health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.
“The new funding announcement will be critical to ensure that the affected communities receive timely support. We are committed to supporting preventive measures as well as dealing with the crisis,” said a statement from the UK embassy in Mogadishu.
The torrential rains in Somalia come after two years of prolonged drought and humanitarian impacts.
The new humanitarian funding comes as the UK announced £100 million in support for countries vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
It included £7.4 million to support the Federal Government of Somalia to find capacity to deal with drought over the next three years.
