The Russian government has forgiven Somalia $684 million in debt after an agreement was signed by Somalia’s finance minister, Bihi Cige, and Russia’s deputy finance minister.

This move is said to accelerate Somalia’s efforts to reach the point of completing debt forgiveness on time.

Russia was one of the countries that had the most debts in Somalia.

It was a few days ago when the Federal Government of Somalia signed a new agreement with Russia which creates an opportunity for growth and development in both countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Abshir Omar Jama, emphasized the cooperation and extensive support that Russia gives to Somalia, especially the improvement of the country’s security forces, including the Navy.

“We had a fruitful discussion with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia regarding mutual interests and ways to further strengthen cooperation, coordination, and joint efforts. Somalia and Russia have a long-standing relationship, and Russia has been a valuable friend in various aspects, especially in the development of our security forces, including the navy,” said the Minister.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, said that Russia is ready to provide military equipment to the Somali forces to fight against terrorism.
