The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has removed the Chief Justice of the country, Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, from his position. In his place, the President has reappointed Ibrahim Idle Suleiman—a legal professional who previously held the role and served as Chief Justice immediately before Bashe Yusuf Ahmed.
According to a press release from the Somali Presidency, the President’s decision follows concerns raised by judges, judicial staff, and legal professionals regarding the integrity and smooth functioning of the judiciary.
The Presidency stated that this change is part of a broader reform plan for judicial institutions, aimed at strengthening integrity, independence, and public trust in the nation’s justice system.
President Hassan Sheikh expressed his hope that the new Chief Justice would effectively carry out his assigned duties, emphasizing the importance of upholding judicial independence, adhering to the rule of law, and ensuring equal justice for all.
Ibrahim Idle Suleyman was first appointed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in July 2011, serving in that position until May 2016. He also served as a legal advisor to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
