Puntland said Somalia had entered a dangerous political phase, saying the term of the Federal institutions had expired and there was no longer a legal framework to continue the administration of the Federal Government.
A press release issued at a meeting of the Puntland Council of Ministers in Garowe, chaired by President Deni, stated that the term of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud would expire on May 15, 2026, while the term of the Federal Parliament would expire on April 14, 2026, arguing that these institutions were now outside the constitutional framework.
Puntland also said it did not recognize Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the legitimate president, accusing him of illegally exercising the powers of the presidential office.
It called for an urgent meeting of all political parties in Somalia to agree on an inclusive electoral process.
The statement said Somalia had returned to a “transitional phase. Puntland called on the international community and international organizations to work directly with Puntland until fully legitimate federal institutions are in place.
Puntland also condemned what it described as repression and intimidation of opposition politicians and the public in Mogadishu, calling on the Somali people to preserve the unity and sovereignty of the country.
