The United Nations said it was closely monitoring the political situation in Somalia, calling on the President and opposition leaders to continue talks to reach a settlement to the electoral dispute and related issues.
The UN Secretary-General’s deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said the UN Secretary-General was closely following political developments in Somalia, in particular the recent talks between the federal government and the Somali Future Council.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the readiness of both parties to the dialogue, and encourages them to continue the discussions to reach an agreement on the direction of the elections and other related issues,” Farhan Haq said.
The UN statement comes after political meetings in Mogadishu ended in a deadlock, with disputes over the electoral process, the constitution and the extension of the government’s term still unresolved.
So far, the international community’s ambassadors based in Mogadishu have been trying to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table to reach an agreement on their differences over the elections.
