The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has invited the Somali Future Council to attend a meeting in Mogadishu on May 10, 2026.
A press release from the presidency said that the invitation came after consultations the president had with various sectors of society in recent weeks, and the planned meeting will focus on issues of the country’s destiny.
According to the presidency, the agenda of the meeting was said to be based on accelerating the state-building process, especially on electoral issues, strengthening national unity and setting the political direction for the future of Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh is said to have underlined the need for mutual understanding and compromise, so that the talks are effective and achieve tangible results.
Hassan Sheikh stressed that the federal government is committed to building a political system based on unity, consensus and protecting the unity, independence and sovereignty of the country.
President Hassan Sheikh’s invitation comes with less than 15 days left in his term, and no agreement has been reached on the country’s national elections.
It is not known whether the opposition will accept this meeting, as previous meetings have failed, accusing the president of wanting to pull the plug on holding elections in the country.
Just before the news broke out in the presidential palace, the Somali opposition announced that they would present within a week a type of election that could be held in the country, which would not be indirect or a one-person-one-vote system.
