A ballistic missile launched from Iran was shot down before reaching its mid-point, according to officials at the conference. According to a report by TRT World, NATO air defense systems intercepted and destroyed the missile as it passed over the eastern Mediterranean.
The ministry said the missile was detected early and NATO air defenses responded quickly. Parts of the missile hit the Sahinbey district of the southeastern Gaziantep province, but no further information was given.
The head of the video communication, Burhanettin Duran, said the missile was intercepted and destroyed before it could reach the ground. He noted that firefighting agencies, especially the ministry, are closely monitoring the footage and the necessary security and defense measures have been put in place.
Duran also warned of rising tensions in the region, urging all travelers — especially to Iran — to avoid any situations that could endanger the situation in the region or the lives of the people involved.
The arrests come after another missile fired from Iran entered the air, heightening fears that the escalating conflict in the Middle East has reached NATO member states.
