The Somali Future Council, in a press release, said it was deeply concerned about the possibility of a delay in the country’s elections, which are expected to be held after the end of the terms of the federal institutions.

The council noted that according to the 2012 Interim Constitution of Somalia, the term of office of the Federal Parliament ends on 14 April 2026, while the term of office of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia ends on 15 May 2026. Therefore, the council called for the elections to be held on time to preserve the constitutional order.

The press release also noted that Somalia has previously experienced political conflicts resulting from delayed elections, most notably in 2021, when a dispute over an extension caused political tensions and security chaos.

The Somali Future Council urged the federal government leaders, politicians and all relevant parties to avoid any action that could lead to electoral delays or political disputes, and to uphold the country’s constitution and system of governance.

The council also called on the state governments to hold their elections in accordance with the constitution and the federal system, in order to strengthen cooperation and trust between the different levels of government.

Finally, the council stressed that Somalia is going through a critical phase that requires responsible leadership, political tolerance and respect for the rule of law, in order to avoid future conflicts that could affect the security, development and future of the country.
