The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia has issued a press release in response to recent statements made by some Members of Parliament and the Committee for Monitoring the Review and Implementation of the Constitution of the Parliament.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Justice of Somalia refuted the statements made by some Members of the House of the People who recently stated that no consultations were held on the country’s Constitution.

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs stated in its statement that the consultations were attended by all regional administrations of the country except Puntland, but the people of these areas expressed their views on amending the country’s Constitution.

“The Ministry clarifies that the constitutional review was jointly implemented by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Independent Commission for the Review and Implementation of the Constitution, and the Parliamentary Oversight Committee (OC), in collaboration with the Federal Member States. These institutions carried out extensive public consultations in all the member states except Puntland to ensure full participation and transparency,” the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs said in a press release.

Finally, the Ministry stressed that all steps taken were transparent and in line with constitutional principles, to ensure that public consultations were inclusive
