Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has today officially dissolved the Puntland Military and Serious Crimes Court.

The president cited a series of complaints from the court’s president and judges, alleging injustice and corruption.

President Deni said that sentencing decisions for serious crimes would now be transferred to the Puntland Courts of Appeal until a new court is established. He ordered the court’s former judicial officers to return to their previous positions.

President Deni said the move was part of a broader reform of the judiciary and the prosecution service to strengthen transparency and justice in Puntland.

Late last year, President Deni ordered a strike against court officials, following allegations of corruption and errors in court rulings.

This new decision comes at a time when President Deni, who has been busy fighting ISIS for nearly a year, is set to reshuffle his cabinet, directors general, and regional governors.
