Somalia and Djibouti on Saturday took a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relations, after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that provides for regular political consultations.
The agreement was announced after an official meeting at the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, where the Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, met with his Djiboutian counterpart, Ambassador Abdoulkader Houssein Omar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting aimed to “strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation to the benefit of both countries.”
The discussions between the two ministers focused on security issues, regional stability, and international issues of mutual interest.
The two ministers underlined the importance of close cooperation to achieve peace, development, and prosperity across the Horn of Africa.
The MoU signed is set to establish a formal mechanism for regular political meetings, which will further strengthen joint priorities at the regional and international levels.
Somalia and Djibouti have deep and multifaceted ties, including history, culture, and brotherhood. The two governments stressed that ongoing relations are key to continuing the historic partnership between the two countries.
