Opposition politicians to Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni have announced the formation of the Puntland Justice and Democracy Council in Garowe, electing Guled Saleh Barre as its chairman.

The council is said to aim to address the difficult political, economic and social conditions in Puntland. They have called for the start of a genuine democratic process to prevent future political chaos.

The chairman of the council, Guled Saleh Barre, said that the council is ready to discuss anything that is wrong with the Puntland government system and that needs to be corrected. He noted that unfortunately, the Puntland administration is not ready for change and correction, accusing the government of suppressing, arresting and defaming people who hold different views.

“It is important to have real accountability. It is imperative to stop the intimidation and pressure on the people,” said Guled Saleh Barre.

The council also supported the preservation of the unity and solidarity of the Somali nation, and called for constitutional amendments to be based on a general consultation involving all parties.

The announcement of this council comes at a time when there are opposition political parties in Puntland, although they are criticized for being integrated into the Puntland administration, with some of the leaders of the opposition parties holding positions in the Puntland government.
