Puntland security forces have arrested youths in the city of Galkayo who were leading a protest against the inaction of the Puntland administration and the federal government’s restrictions on development projects in the Mudug region.
The youths were arrested while they were at the Awaale sports stadium, where Eid prayers were being held this morning. The youths were said to have been carrying banners with messages on the needs of the people who had gathered there.
The Mudug regional administration issued the order to arrest the youths in order to stop the protest that the youths had insisted on holding.
The mayor of Galkayo, Mohamed Abdirisaq, said that it was not the right time to organize a protest in the city, calling on the community to remain calm.
Recently, the Mudug regional administration said that clear action would be taken against anyone who tries to incite social unrest, accusing the youth organizing the protests of being organized by the Federal Government, and of wanting to cause unrest in Galkayo.
