The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has dismissed the Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Mohamed Amiir, who had held the position for six months.

A decree issued by the President’s Office also appointed Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, who previously held the position, as the Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu.

President Hassan Sheikh based Muungaab’s appointment on his knowledge and experience, saying that he had previously played a positive role in the reconstruction of Mogadishu and the overall development of services provided by the Banadir Regional Administration.

The President urged the new Governor to prioritize the development of the capital, reconciliation, and strengthening cooperation between the security forces and the community of Banadir Region.

It is not known why the former Governor of Banadir Region was dismissed, however, a video of Governor Amiir accepting a flag from a disabled boy who was among the audience attending a match welcoming some former football stars has gone viral on social media.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with the governor accused of treating a disabled civilian as a government official with abuse and disrespect.

In December last year, Amir was appointed governor of Banadir Region, replacing Hussein Jimale Maddale.
